Six years ago, before we were married, my wife experienced a heartbreaking loss. Her baby girl, who we lovingly remember as Pequeña Azul — named for her beautiful blue eyes — passed away from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.

After receiving her first vaccines, Pequeña Azul began to get sick. She spent months in the hospital, fighting a battle no child should ever have to face. During that time, my wife was left on her own. Her former partner walked away, and she had to hold everything together — working to support the household, caring for her three other children, and spending every possible moment by Pequeña Azul’s side. Her mom was part of the support system at home, helping care for the three older kids.

It was an impossible situation — but she wasn’t alone.

Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada stepped in when she needed it most.

They didn’t just offer emotional support. They covered the funeral expenses, eased the financial strain, and for the next three years, brought Christmas gifts and joy to the other three kids. That compassion meant everything. My wife says that without their support, she would have struggled even more than she already was.

Today, we honor that chapter of her life — and Pequeña Azul’s memory — by giving back.
